Why am I holding the Seam Ripper.

Why am I holding the Seam Ripper.

If you walk into my classroom, you may very well find me holding a seam ripper. Most of the time, it isn’t even my seam ripper (mostly because I have no idea where mine is !), and it’s almost never being used on my own project.

I’m usually taking apart a student’s project.

I firmly believe students should not be the ones spending class time ripping out their own seams. When a mistake happens, there are usually better ways for them to keep learning: assembling the next step, understanding why something went wrong, or moving forward instead of spending time taking out an oops seam!

Class time is precious. You paid for that time, and it should be spent learning  - not becoming best friends with Mr. Seam Ripper.

Since I’m already walking around, checking progress, I might as well keep my hands busy. And let’s be honest… I’m pretty good with a seam ripper.  It gives me a chance to show a few tricks for using it efficiently, too. While I take out seams, run the pieces to the iron for a quick press, my students keep moving forward. When it comes back to them, they’re ready to redo, adjust, or continue on their merry way.

So if you see me holding a seam ripper in class, it just means someone is learning - and I’m doing my job as a teacher.

Helping you make memories, one stitch at a time.
