I am a big believer that you need to do something at least once before you break out the good fabric — even if someone else is teaching you how to make it.
You will often hear me say, “DON’T USE YOUR FAVORITE FABRIC!”
Why? It’s simple.
We have to learn to walk before we run… and sometimes before that, we need to learn how to put on our shoes (aka turn on the machine and thread it correctly).
When you go to a class, you’re there to learn a new technique or a new skill. A class is meant to help you learn — not to make a perfect project. Unless you’re fully prepared to risk the “good” fabric, grab something inexpensive, ugly, or those leftovers you don’t quite have enough of to do anything else with.
Using practice fabric gives you freedom.
Freedom to make mistakes.
Freedom to experiment.
Freedom to mess it up… and if absolutely necessary, throw it out and start again.
Once you’ve made the mistakes and learned what works for you — then (and only then) — break out the good fabric.
Helping you make memories, one step at a time. 🧵💙
